This is the North .... Episode 1
Ever Wondered How We Can Use the Wisdom of the Past to Solve the Challenges of Today?
As a Northern lass I am well aware of the incredible heritage that exists in the North of England. I am proud and even awe struck by it. Whether it be Joseph Swan’s lightbulb. George Stevenson’s steam engine or the North’s advances in mining, steel making, shipbuilding and textiles. I know that the North of England was the industrial capital of its day.
But how can we use that industrial heritage to tackle challenges such as the poverty gap? And what can we learn from the past to help us build a brighter future for our society?
These were the questions I asked my expert guests Rob Charlton, Liz Mayes and Jo Curry MBE on the first episode of my brand new podcast This is the North. And we came up with some interesting solutions!
Heritage Stories as a Foundation for the Future
Technical innovations, buildings and famous names define the industrial heritage of the North.
But it is in the stories of ordinary people where we will find the answers to our biggest questions. In the stories of the miners involved in the pitman’s parliament. The tales of the shipbuilding craftsmen of the river Tyne. Or the yarns of the mill towns of Lancaster!
Stories of pride, camaraderie and community spirit. But also of grit, determination and engineering prowess. Factors we should build into our foundation as we move forward.
A foundation that should optimise the friendly and inclusive culture of the North. Attractive to the diverse voices needed to capitalise on current opportunities.
A foundation representing a valued workforce. A workforce whose needs are heard, understood and acted upon.
And a foundation built on an appreciation of the industrial heritage of the North. Using that heritage to inspire skill growth in future generations.
Because if it is the wisdom of the past we seek. Such wisdom will come from the knowledge and experience of the people of the North, past and present.
Cultivating a Connection to the North is a Great Investment
The industrial greats of the North changed the world with their innovation. But it is their philanthropic legacies that have had the largest impact on the region.
Demonstrating that the power of people’s connection to the North has huge value.
But cultivating a strong connection to the region can have wider societal benefits.
Sunderland University understands this. Its new medical degrees will train the doctors needed to address local health challenges. Producing a generation of doctors forever connected to the region.
